    • rustls is now the default TLS backend, instead of native-tls.
    • rustls crypto provider defaults to aws-lc instead of ring. (rustls-no-provider exists if you want a different crypto provider)

      • To use different roots, call tls_certs_only(your_roots).
    • native-tls now includes ALPN. To disable, use native-tls-no-alpn.

    • Long-deprecated methods and crate features have been removed (such as trust-dns, which was renamed hickory-dns a while ago).
  • Many TLS-related methods renamed to improve autocompletion and discovery, but previous name left in place with a "soft" deprecation. (just documented, no warnings)
    • For example, prefer tls_backend_rustls() over use_rustls_tls().

⚠️ Blocked: oauth2 crate incompatibility

This PR cannot be merged yet because the oauth2 crate v5.0.0 depends on reqwest 0.12 and does not support reqwest 0.13.

Evidence:

CI Errors:
The auth feature fails to compile because reqwest::Client (0.13) doesn't implement oauth2::AsyncHttpClient which was compiled against reqwest 0.12:

error[E0277]: the trait bound \`reqwest::Client: oauth2::AsyncHttpClient<'_>\` is not satisfied

Resolution:
This PR should remain open but cannot be merged until:

  1. The oauth2 crate releases a version supporting reqwest 0.13, OR
  2. We remove/disable the auth feature when using reqwest 0.13

I recommend keeping this PR open and periodically checking for oauth2 updates.
